Independent Scholars of Asia, Inc.

A PROFESSIONAL, NON-PROFIT, NON-PARTISAN ORGANIZATION

2008 CONFERENCE

INDEPENDENT SCHOLARS OF ASIA, Inc. is a professional, non-profit, non-partisan organization that represents Asian specialists who (a) prefer to stay independent, (b) are looking for a tenured academic position, (c) are considering an alternative career, or (d) are planning a career in the field of Asian studies.
Founded in 1981, Independent Scholars of Asia are affiliated with the Association for Asian Studies. We conduct local workshops and lecture series which reflect the research of our members. We maintain, furthermore, consultant rosters and cultivate networks to make the expertise of our members available to the public. ISA also serves as a fiscal agent for administering research grants.
Our newsletter, published three times a year (April/August/December), announces conferences and other relevant events as well as grants, fellowships, and vacancies. It also contains inquiries, research reports, essays on Asian culture (written by our members), and book reviews. So far, we published 26 books, 21 of them were proceedings of our international conferences and one on a member's research.
We have currently 138 members (93 in 34 U.S. states and 45 in 23 foreign, mainly Asian, countries). Our members represent almost every field of the humanities, e.g., anthropology, art history, consulting, economics, education, ethnomusicology, history, international management and policy making, interpreting, journalism, library science, linguistics, social work, translating, and comparative religion. Most members have already worked in one or more Asian countries.
We invite you to join us. Annual dues are $18 for General or $12 for Supportive or Student Members. The dues entitle to individual counseling and also include subscription to our newsletter.
